We are uncovering better ways of developing software by doing it and helping others do it. Through this work we have come to value:

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan

That is, while there is value in the items on the right, we value the items on the left more.

Alastair Calderwood: The satisfaction of using Agile, to me as a developer, is to witness the enthusiasm of end-users in contributing to projects. Software engineers are no longer distrusted, as is sadly still the case with some projects, where rigid requirements are set in cement before development has even begun. Agile is also one of the keys to the success of open source, where software is already widely used before its official release; positive criticism and suggestions for new features lead to a cycle of continual improvement.

Martin Rudolfson: Wow, this is how I managed software projects 20 years ago, but I didn't know by then that it had a scientific name. I always had to fight the bad guys and their detailed plans. Now I understand they were the Waterfall guys, and they were wrong!
